Block 1 — 23:05
Caller: Yes (King of Spades — standard) Caller card: King of Spades — Measured, carrying old weight
He told a story. Not recent. The years had settled into it.
There was a friend. Someone who stood by him through things he wouldn’t name — the early days, he said, which could mean the regime, the first cold winter, the war, or something specific to his own life that he had no intention of explaining to a radio host at midnight. The friend had been there. And when it counted, when the reciprocal moment arrived, the Caller hadn’t returned the favour.
He said it simply: I thought I was protecting them.
A pause, then: I was protecting myself.
He still saw that friend’s face in crowds. Thirty years and he still looked for them. He didn’t ask for anything. He had just needed to say it somewhere that wasn’t his own head.
Block 2 — 00:05
Caller: Yes (Queen of Spades — standard) Caller card: Queen of Spades — Controlled, barely
She had a conversation earlier tonight. One of those that loops in the mind like a broken chorus.
It started small — a joke, a throwaway comment. But something in the reply caught on her. She couldn’t stop replaying it. The words had been ordinary, but the shape of them felt wrong. Or too right. She couldn’t determine whether she’d missed something vital, whether it was an accusation in disguise, a warning, or a goodbye she hadn’t understood was a goodbye.
She said WBPR was the only thing that still sounded real to her. That the voice was stable when other things weren’t.
Then, before signing off: Do you ever wonder if we’re being rehearsed?
No context. No elaboration.
The question sat in the air after the line dropped. Oso didn’t answer it. There wasn’t time, and there may not be an answer.
Block 3 — 01:00
Caller: Yes (Ace of Hearts — standard) Caller card: Ace of Hearts — Gentle, quietly complex
A clear voice. Intentional in a way most callers aren’t — like someone who had decided exactly what they were going to say before they dialled.
They had just become a parent. Or they had just lost one. The way they spoke, both things folded into each other — beginnings and endings sharing the same breath. Long walks through abandoned housing blocks. Holding someone too small to understand this world yet. The specific weight of something new and something gone occurring in the same season.
They asked for a request: something sunny, something warm. A dream of elsewhere.
Do you have a song for new beginnings that still knows how to grieve the old?
They didn’t wait for an answer. They trusted the choice would be right.
Block 4 — 01:45
Caller: None (broadcast ended before final caller)
Block 4 cards drawn. Broadcast did not continue to the final call. No record of why.
Oso Sur — Personal Notes
Three calls. The fourth slot stayed empty — something came up, or something didn’t, and the broadcast ended before I could take it.
The old man’s story: guilt like that calcifies over time. It doesn’t go away; it just becomes architecture. He wasn’t looking for absolution. He was just tired of carrying it alone in the dark, and the dark is exactly what this station is for.
The woman with the looping conversation — I’ve been thinking about what she said. Are we being rehearsed. Not are we being watched, not is something wrong, but rehearsed. Like there’s a script and she’s unsure whether she’s reading from it or writing it. That’s a specific kind of unease. Worth noting.
The one who wanted a song for new beginnings that could still hold grief: I played the sunniest thing I had that still had weight in it. I hope it was right.
The fourth block played into an empty line. Sometimes that’s the broadcast. Sometimes the silence is the whole point of having a signal.
Dawn not observed. Session ended early.
